There are a few disadvantages to using wood though. First, wooden structures are susceptible to termite infestation. Secondly, wood will over time wear off, and needs regular maintenance through painting, water-proofing, and re-shingling. Thirdly, wooden houses can be quite heavy, but this shouldn't be a problem if you don't plan to move the structure around.
As for plastic, most pet structures are built using the heavy-duty kind. This makes them much more durable than wood, and lighter at the same time. Cleaning a plastic structure is easy as all you need is soap and a hose. One other reason some people prefer plastic is that it does not absorb odors, as wood does. There's also little maintenance work to be done as plastic will not wear off like wood.
A disadvantage with using plastic is that the material doesn't offer that much insulation against cold or heat. Unless you add some insulating material, your pet is going to have a rough time in there during summers and winters. Another problem with plastic is that the structure can bleach out over time with prolonged exposure to the sun.
Besides the material, remember also to get the right sizing for your dog. The house should be large enough for the dog to fit in, but not too spacious as to cause them to lose heat.
